Nanoporous aerogel insulation material is recognized worldwide as the solid material with the best thermal insulation performance. Because it is light and has a bluish tint, it is known as "blue smoke." It has a high porosity of 80-99.8%, with typical pore sizes of 1-100 nm, a specific surface area of 200-1000 m²/g, a density of 3-100 kg/m³, and a room temperature thermal conductivity as low as 0.014 W/(m·K). Aerogel materials possess excellent properties such as high thermal insulation, high flame retardancy, and weather resistance, and are hailed as one of the ten materials that will change the 21st century.

Aerogel Material Thermal Insulation Principle

  • The heat conduction path is infinitely long: The mesh-like framework of aerogels infinitely extends the heat conduction path, making heat conduction extremely difficult; and the nanoporous structure forms countless gas-solid interfaces, making it difficult for heat to be conducted at the gas-solid interfaces.

  • Air cannot circulate in the pores: The pore size of aerogel (20-50nm) is smaller than the mean free path of air (70nm), which means that gas molecules cannot circulate freely in the pores, thus inhibiting thermal convection between gas molecules.

  • The aerogel network framework forms an "infinite thermal barrier effect," which has a good shielding effect on infrared radiation.
